In a season of church decline, lay people carry an increased responsibility of leadership without the same resources of spiritual and relational support that our clergy receive. Our dioceses believe that hope-filled, vision-grounded, and courageous leadership comes from ongoing renewal of the inner life through the Holy Spirit and spiritual practices in the path of Jesus. The Communities for Spiritual Vitality will offer spiritual renewal and fellowship through in-person retreats, regular online discipleship groups, practice in discernment, and FUN, for 1-2-year cohorts of lay leaders from parishes with limited clergy leadership. Through these cohorts, the Communities expect to create a network that will reanimate parish leaders as they continue their practices and connections beyond the cohort year and share these practices with those whom they serve among. Cohorts are intentionally small (10-20 participants) and drawn from the close, but structurally different, dioceses of Vermont and Massachusetts. This will provide diversity of contexts and experiences, as well as learnings that can be gleaned for the future of our whole New England Province.
