Faith in Place's project is designed to deeply engage clergy and lay congregational leaders in order to advance environmental justice. Through this work, congregations will gain greater clarity about themselves as Christian communities of faith and their role in contexts increasingly shaped by a climate crisis that disproportionately impacts those with the least resources of resiliency. The project will engage Green Teams, i.e., three or more members of a congregation who educate, connect, and advocate for environmental justice within the context of their faith community's unique history, culture, and theological practices. Diverse Green Teams leaders and clergy from across Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin will be engaged through a cohort model to 1) receive intensive mentorship, guidance, and education about ways to revitalize their congregations through Creation Care; 2) explore, learn, and adapt to their communities' assets, needs, challenges, and the ways they have evolved; 3) collaboratively learn alongside and from other congregations and Green Teams; and 4) develop and implement both a 12-month Action Plan project and a long-term Action Plan for their congregation to complete as informed by community needs and vision. Action Plan activities will support Green Team leaders and clergy in galvanizing their congregations on projects to create long-lasting, outwardly focused change benefiting their communities. Congregational learning will be facilitated through small, regional cohorts with consistent check-ins, networking opportunities, and two in-person, intensive retreats.
