Churches today face unique challenges to their health and sustainability, putting pressures on the rhythms of their Christian practice and community, as well as the health of their leadership. Some of this pressure stems from the fact that while the landscape of culture and society—in relation to religious institutions—has shifted, many churches operate with methodologies that don’t address new cultural realities. Forge America seeks to help churches engage our new cultural and social climate through the Forge America Missional Culture for Thriving Congregations Project. As a church community regains its missional identity (pivoting from an attractional identity to Sunday services), it finds new purpose to thrive in the community work of displaying and announcing the Kingdom of God within their context. This program will engage a three-phase holistic coaching period of 12 months, experienced in cohorts for cooperative learning. Forge will host 3-4 cohorts of 10-20 churches each, engaging in 12-month journeys where participants incubate and launch their missional identity, reinvigorating their call to participate in God’s mission within their community and context. Pivoting from a focus on institutional survival—which involves attracting people through consumerist methods—to a focus on engagement as “sent” people (John 20:21) will bring about a new life, purpose, and connection to participants' local context. Participants will engage in regular connection together, including pre- and post-cohort in-person gatherings. At the end of cohort terms, each participant will have the opportunity to apply for financial grants to fund a missional project or effort based on their new learnings and posture.
