The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the inequities and fragility of our world, which impact all of us, but have a particularly disparate impact on low-income people and people of color. More profoundly, the pandemic has illuminated the brokenness of “community” or "koinonia" [κοινωνία] in the Greek—that sacramental space in which we are able to come together, to find and give purpose and support, and to collectively address the problems that our society faces. For Gamaliel, that sacramental space begins within the church and moves outward into the larger community. Sadly, now that we have reached the other side of this pandemic, some of our member churches have not survived, and others have lost key leadership to COVID-19, making it more challenging to be the Church in the world. As we emerge from the pandemic, we, as people of faith, have a significant opportunity to build, rebuild, repair, and/or deepen the relationships and ministries that are vital to building community and living into God’s call for the Church. “Transforming Congregations and Communities through Sacred Conversations,” is designed to do just that through: 1) deep listening; 2) strategic discernment; and 3) design and implementation of relevant ministries."
