Today we, the Brethren in Christ U.S., continue to re-envision what it means for our congregations to be unapologetic followers of Jesus, practicing our values of simplicity, piety, and service in the peace tradition. This Thriving Congregations project allows Brethren in Christ U.S. congregations to explore and better understand their place amidst social and cultural change by asking a series of three questions: who are we, where are we, and what is our impact in a cohort-style learning community. The program seeks to emphasize the potential for congregations to thrive by focusing on identity, church health and community connection. The participating congregations will develop a clear sense of their values and mission by engaging the 10 BIC U.S. core values, assessing internal congregational health, integrating principles of neighboring, and developing outward-facing community ministries that are unique for their assets and needs. The project allows 75 Brethren in Christ U.S. congregations to participate in one of three cohorts (25 congregations per cohort) whereby congregational teams participate in a 3-phase learning process. Our hope is for congregations to grow in collective BIC identity, so they may be equipped to respond to the world around us. Through this prolonged effort, BIC U.S. expects to expand our practices of simplicity, piety, covenant community, and service to live out the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:34-40). We hope that congregations can embrace a model of church focusing on community connection in order to strengthen congregational identity and that they can embrace practice that is resilient, peaceful, and hopeful.
