Project Name: Thriving Congregations Initiative
Description:

Grace Mission University (GMU) is a denominational seminary of the Presbyterian Church International (PCI) committed to equipping students to become academically enriched, spiritually empowered, and live as disciples of Jesus, leading others to Christ and fulfilling the Great Commission. GMU has been especially dedicated to serving Asian American churches in the U.S. and will continue to do so through three ground-breaking projects that will bring healing and hope to these churches and their communities. The projects will be operated over the next three years (Spring 2024–Winter 2026) under three project leaders, as follows: Project #1: Understanding the AA Church’s Hybrid/Liminal Identity (Dr. Andrew Lee) To help the AA church understand the cultural/political milieu she resides in and to better clarify her vision and mission. Project #2: Healing from COVID Stereotyping (Dr. Sang Il Kim) To utilize “moral injury” principles to bring healing to the Korean American (KA) community that suffered from crimes committed in the name of hate. Project #3: Developing a Learning Community that focuses on Community Engagement (Dr. Hanjun Kwon) To create learning communities within the KA church that overcomes the social alienation felt within the immigrant church and reaches out into the local multicultural communities. Overall, these projects will 1) equip the Asian American leadership to navigate their unique landscape in the U.S., 2) help Korean American congregations be relieved of traumatic experiences during the pandemic, and 3) invite them to a learning process for nurturing authentic relationships with multiethnic neighbors.
