Project Name: Luke 10 Congregations: Equipping Churches to Do Justice
Description:

The purpose of Luke 10 Congregations: Equipping Churches to Do Justice is to address rising white Christian nationalism across the country and call people of faith into ministries of justice. To accomplish this purpose, Showing Up for Racial Justice, in collaboration with the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice, will utilize Jesus’s model of ministry outlined in Luke 10 to train and empower congregations to address white Christian nationalism and to support congregations’ work to overcome racism and poverty for the thriving of congregations and their communities. In Luke 10, Jesus trains 70 disciples for ministry in their communities by equipping them to understand the cultural and social conditions of their communities. He first sends them out into their communities to address the needs of those who are suffering through partnership and connection, and then prompts them to reflect on their efforts in preparation for further ministry. The Luke 10 Congregations project, likewise, seeks to facilitate a collective learning process through which congregations will (a) be equipped for ministries of justice by better understanding poverty, racism, and white Christian nationalism in their communities, (b) engage in ministries with community partners to meet the needs of those in their communities impacted by poverty, racism, and white Christian nationalism, and (c) reflect on and further prepare for ministries of justice and embodying the gospel call to preach good news to the poor, set the oppressed free, and proclaim jubilee.
