Our project will identify and clearly document Catholic congregations nationwide that are African American or majority black or that have a significant, active, and participating black presence. We will chronicle their numbers, their geographical locations, their histories and affiliations, the characteristics of their staff, their physical structures, and their strengths and challenges. We plan to identify the demographic and cultural changes that present challenges to these congregations in terms of the ages, backgrounds, gifts, resources and potentials, and economic conditions of existing and new members of the congregations. As part of this, we will reinforce and revive Catholic tradition and theology as expressed in the Catholic church and which infuse the rich African American culture and symbols. We will create processes that will provide greater clarity and understanding of our vision and mission as Christians.
